
Area Guide: Vicarage Gardens, Newsome
Vicarage Gardens is a development of new three and four bedroom houses built in natural Yorkshire stone. The generously proportioned family homes feature high-quality fixtures and fittings throughout, and come with garages and mature, established gardens.
The new homes are located just off Jackroyd Lane in the quiet village of Newsome in West Yorkshire. They are around 2 miles from the centre of Huddersfield and are also close to some of England’s most beautiful rural scenery, so have the perfect balance of town and countryside.
Transport links
- Berry Brow station is within easy walking distance of Vicarage Gardens. The train journey to Huddersfield is just 8 minutes, Leeds is 41 minutes away, Manchester is 55 minutes away and it takes an hour and 5 minutes to get to Sheffield.
- Vicarage Gardens is only 4 miles from the M62 and drivers can easily commute to a number of major towns and cities, including Huddersfield (5 minutes), Bradford (25 minutes), Leeds (30 minutes), Sheffield (45 minutes) and Manchester (45 minutes).
- The closest airport is Leeds Bradford International (24 miles), while Manchester Airport (40 miles) and Robin Hood Airport (40 miles) are also easily reached from Newsome.
Nearest secondary school
Newsome High School and Sports College is a 10-minute walk from Vicarage Gardens. The school, which has around 650 students aged 11-16, is rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted. In 2012, 94% of students achieved five A*-C grades at GCSE.
Primary schools
The village is home to Hillside Primary School for children aged 3-11, which is rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted, and Newsome Junior School, which takes 7-11-years-olds and boasts an ‘outstanding’ rating.
Healthcare
Newsome has a three-doctor GP practice, Newsome Surgery, and the nearest accident and emergency department is located less than four miles away at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The village has Newsome Dental Practice, while there are also a number of other dentists within a three-mile radius.
Entertainment and dining out
There are a number of good local restaurants, including Grappolo and Laxmi, together with a selection of popular pubs, such as the Fountain Inn and the Golden Fleece. Nearby Huddersfield and Holmfirth also have some excellent restaurants and pubs.
Leeds and Sheffield both have a wide variety of theatres, live music venues and galleries, but there are some cultural attractions closer to Newsome. Huddersfield has an Odeon cinema and the Lawrence Batley Theatre, while Holmfirth is home to the Picturedrome live music venue.
Sports clubs and activities
The village is home to Hall Bowler Cricket Club and Newsome Panthers rugby league club, both of which have junior and senior teams. There are also a number of football clubs catering for all ages. The fitness centre at Newsome High School is open to the public, while there are a selection of private gyms in Huddersfield.
The local area is great for outdoor activities and has some of the best cycling and walking routes in the UK. There are also some fun family attractions, such as Eureka! The National Children's Museum, Greenhead Park, Kirklees Light Railway, Cannon Hall Farm and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
