House Moving Checklist
18th December 2017
Buying a new home is exciting, but the stress of moving can often take away some of the joy. To help you relax and focus on your new start, we’ve put together a helpful list of the tasks you need to tick off ahead of moving day.
- Book time off work before and after your moving date: Don’t make the mistake of only booking off the one day. Be sure to take off as much time as you need before and after the big day.
- Brush up on your terminology: Negotiating with solicitors and estate agents can be daunting, and this is often made worse by the sheer amount of jargon you will need to get to grips with. To help you out, we’ve put together a glossary of property terminology.
- Look for a removal company: Get quotes from a few different local removal companies well ahead of time. You can find reputable companies through the British Association of Removers or by asking family and friends for recommendations. If you decide not to hire professional removers, ask family and friends to help you move in plenty of time for them to also book time off work.
- Check your home insurance: Make sure you are covered by your home insurance policy from the day you move into your new home. If you’re moving into a house that is a different size to where you live now, this could also be a good time to review the value of your contents and building cover.
- Make a list of everyone you need to notify about the move: Don’t forget to notify everyone you need to about your new address (banks, utility providers, subscription services etc.). Make a list in order of priority, and start to work your way through it.
- Order new furniture: If you will need any new large pieces of furniture such as beds, sofas or dining tables, order these within plenty of time so you don’t end up moving into an empty home. You may need to hire storage space to keep any new furniture in while you move.
- Book a date to have your broadband installed: Internet service providers can often be booked a couple of weeks in advance so be sure to confirm a date for installation before you move in.
- Confirm arrangements with your removal company: A week or two before you move in, finalise arrival times with your removal company and make sure they have clear directions to both your existing and new addresses to avoid any mix-ups on the day.
- Arrange for someone to look after children and pets: Having a friend or family member take care of your children and pets on the day will allow you to fully focus on the move.
- Pack a ‘first night box’: Pack everything you will need on your first night and morning in your new home in its own box. Include things like a change of clothes, toiletries, towels, bedding, pet food and the kettle. Moving is tiring so make sure you can quickly find everything you need to make that first night easier.
- Have spare keys cut: It can be easy to misplace your keys when unpacking. Have extra keys cut for everyone in the house and for family and friends who live nearby.
- Register with a doctor: If you are moving to a new area, be sure to register with a GP and dentist (and a vet if you have pets) as soon as possible.
Moving into your new home doesn’t need to be stressful. As long as you plan each step of your move, you shouldn’t have any reason to worry.
